I’ve written about this statement from Joseph Campbell before and it was shared very well in the movie 13 Hours by David Denman the actor that played Dave ‘Boon’ Benton. I reference it again in this week’s Sunday Situation Report (SITREP) because of a failure I faced during Jiu Jitsu and in hopes to help others push past their own fears. This week I tapped out to pressure from a large teammate. This means I was completely pinned, tired and thought I had not alternative.
– Should not have quit.
– I let my mind give up long before my body needed to
– Learned from it.
How am I and how do I think others can get past this feeling of dread? By pushing ourselves to the limit on our own time. Do burpees, run, jumping jacks, the Assault Bike, or whatever movements tell our minds we’re done…then go another 5 seconds, 10 seconds, etc. Build up to it. Face it head on. Keep showing up. Let our self-imposed hardship at least set a baseline for hardships we may face or have already faced in real life. And of course, I’m going to put myself back in that situation and breathe.
