*Adapted for Public Safety from @jockowillink ‘Rough Transitions: A Message to the Vets’, AKA Jocko Podcast 17. I’ve listened to this and read it many times. It captures many emotions for me, and I’m sure for may others like me. @jockowillink’s version is a masterpiece of understanding, I thought I’d add my $.02 to applying this to Public Safety:
“Because we are talking about Public Safety, there is still tragedy and loss and darkness there…and that’s ok.
And to EMTs, and Cops, and Paramedics, and 911 Operators and Firefighters…it’s OK….its…..OK.
It’s ok to feel that darkness; to remember it; and miss it; hate it; love it; and it’s OK to wish it never happened, and at the same time, to wish it never stopped.
And it’s ok to want to take it all back and at the same time to want to do it all again; and….if you think that people don’t understand. It’s OK…..they don’t. BUT you do.
You know darkness, you know death; BUT…more than that, you know life. You know light. You know people’s laughter and baby’s crys better than anyone.
Ssoo…embrace the darkness…don’t look away from it…don’t drown it in booze or pills…don’t end your life and leave your family and friends wondering and suffering.
Instead LIVE YOUR LIFE…with exercise and training and Jiu Jitsu and sharing those souls you did keep in this world or that you helped bring into this world and with talking about your darkness with your brothers and sisters.
Move forward…into the future, with your significant other, with your kids, with your friends, with your Brother and Sisters in the badge.”
