There is Only Life Balance

“There is no work/life balance. There is only life balance.” – Kevin Pannell, PMP, January 2023

I’m thankful to have learned this the hard way. I believe it will stick better. In addition to my personal lessons learned from 2022, I’m glad the line between the “perfect work world” and the real, day-to-day life that we all live has been blurred over the past 2-3 years.

I started working in a mostly remote, but a hybrid model in early 2019. While working I recall thinking the virtual call environment had to be perfect. No outside sounds, e.g. kids yelling, dogs barking, etc. Then, as the self-quarantines and lockdowns started in 2020, the notion of the perfect call environment faded away. And I’m glad.

Forgetting to unmute, kids running in the room or homeschooling behind us on calls, intermittent sound, and on and on. I know I feel more relieved when someone else’s dog barks and the rest of us share that understanding that what happens in the household directly affects what happens at work.

Creating Life Balance

  • Take care of your mind by disconnecting from work at the end of the day
  • Take care of your body through regular, daily exercise or activity
  • Take are of your spirit by practicing mindfulness, prayer, or just by sitting and listening to the trees
  • Fill the void of working remotely by connecting with humans in the real world

Wishing all my LinkedIn connections Godspeed in 2023,

Kevin
